Child Month Logo

Child Month Logo

In celebration of Child Month, the Department of Children and Family Services will be hosting a special Bedtime Stories event for families and children at Books & Books on Wednesday, May 27th at 6PM.

This year, the theme for Child Month is Time with Your Child-A Wise Investment, and in keeping with this idea, the main purpose of Bedtime Stories at Books & Books will be to show parents the benefits of Making Bedtime a Family Time by reading to their children.

Miriam Foster, Programmes Officer of the Empowerment and Community Development Agency, will be giving parents useful tips on making stories exciting, getting their kids involved in story time, and creating alternatives to television. Each tip will be demonstrated by the reading of a great children’s book. Following the presentation, parents will be given the chance to practice the tips by choosing a book from the extensive Books & Books selection to read to their children. Gentle lullabies will play in the background while parents and children enjoy quality family time.

Milk and cookies for the first 30 children will be provided by the Department of Children and Family Services. Miriam Foster has also chosen the selection of children’s books that follow her tips, and these will be available for purchase at a 5% discount on the evening of the event.

This event is free and open to the public. For up to date information on all Books & Books events in Grand Cayman, visit www.booksandbooks.com

Lori Rye

Lori Rye is the newest addition to the Cayman Sports Ltd team and will be heading the health and fitness aspect of the company. Lori is a personal fitness trainer and will be based at the gym at the Grand Cayman Beach Suites (formally the Hyatt) but if clients don’t want to go to the gym she is mobile and brings all the necessary equipment to your home or office.

Lori has just arrived from Toronto, but she spent the previous 10 years working in Bermuda as a personal trainer. She has a degree in Physical Education and Linguistics as well as personal training certifications from the American Council of Exercise (ACE) and the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

While in Bermuda, Lori discovered a passion in the pre- and post-natal fitness genre. She developed a “Baby Boot Camp” for mothers and tots which was very successful. “It was a positive experience for both the mothers and the babies,” says Lori. “Mums were able to socialize and get fit while the children loved being outside and bonding with their moms. We will be adding this service to the fitness options at Cayman Sports Ltd.”

Lori’s newest discovery is Yoga, and she has just received the Yoga Exercise Specialist (YES) qualification. “It really improves my clients workouts. The more in tune you are with your body, the better it will respond to the stimulus of exercise.”

Artist April Bending

Artist April Bending

After a year of showing internationally in New York City, Berlin, Beijing and Milan, artist April Bending is having a show in Grand Cayman at Cafe Del Sol in Camana Bay on May 14th, 2009 from 6:00-9:00 PM.

April has been recognized locally in the past by being invited to display eight paintings on the set of the Frankie Flowers’ movie “Haven”, starring Orlando Bloom, and by having images chosen for the flags of the National Heroes Day Celebrations.

April Bending

April Bending

The theme “Camana Blues” is based on the colour of the paintings which are in shades of blue, evoking the beauty of our Caribbean Sea. By focusing on the serenity of the sea, as opposed to its tremendous potential destructive power, Bending creates a subtlety which is heightened by the use of a dark under painting. This quiets the colours applied in layers over the top.

Be sure to stop in Friday evening for a yummy coffee drink and a chance to meet April in person. Cayman is fortunate to have an internationally acclaimed artist on our midst for an enchanting evening. Come to Cafe Del Sol in Camana Bay this Friday evening  6:00-9:00PM and see this gorgeous artwork for yourself!
