Dance Class

Dance Class

Before there was Zumba, before there was hip-hip, there was classic dance in the Cayman Islands, courtesy of Mrs. Jackie Balls, known locally in Cayman is “Miss Jackie.” Miss Jackie’s School of Dance is the oldest dance school in the Cayman Islands, founded in 1973. The School offers dance classes such as Classical Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Tap, Street Funk and Hip Hop, and recreational classes as well as Ballroom, Belly Dancing, Zumba Dancing and Pilates.

Miss Jackie is committed to fostering a caring, friendly relaxed atmosphere however discipline is one of the School’s strongest assets. Through the medium of dance, they strive to inspire self-confidence, a spirit of cooperation among students, and an opportunity for growth in their personal lives.

It’s a wonderful environment to shape up, learn to dance, become more graceful, lose weight, or just have fun.

Reaching your Fitness Goals

Posted by admin
Jeanna Parsons

Jeanna Parsons

Jeanna Parsons, one of Cayman’s leading fitness experts, recently published an article on www.caymanactive.com about reaching your 2009 fitness goals. Here are some of her suggestions for overcoming your personal challenges:

“I would like to invite you to take an inventory of your current lifestyle routine. Life is about balance. For most people there is always one area in their life that is not in proper balance with the other areas of their life. You either find you have too much in one area or not enough of another.

Search yourself to find out where your imbalances lie and begin there. In my experience, I have found most people work more than anything else and exercise and eating right is almost always what falls to the way side. Integrating proper diet and exercise into your daily routine can be done with a little planning and some expertise.

If making exercise and eating right is one of your lifestyle improvements you want to make, enlisting the help of a nutritional counselor or trainer would be advisable especially if you find you have not gotten the results you desire on your own.

Having the proper support system is vital in achieving your lifestyle goals. Always begin by making small changes. Submerging yourself into a vigorous exercise program or restricted diet will only set you up for disappointment. Permanent lifestyle improvements are the ones that and are made gradually and over time. Slow and steady wins the race!

Pay attention to your body. The body has a way of telling us exactly what it needs, it is just for us to listen to it. It is important to remember that when setting out to achieve your lifestyle goals, 10% is perspiration and 90% determination. Therefore maintaining a positive outlook is so important.  I would like to leave you with some of the positive thoughts I think about often. I wish you all the best in 2009!

1).  Everything takes time.
2).  Bad habits were not formed in one day and reversing them will not take a day to break.
3).  You are only human.
4).  Everything is perfect in its’ present state.
5).  Don’t worry because worrying never helped anything.
6).  The only opinion that matters is your own.
7).  Be yourself.
8).  If you don’t succeed, try, try again.
9).  Be patient with yourself.
10). You can do it!

Cayman Style Cardio

Posted by admin
Seven Mile Beach

Seven Mile Beach

Heart disease is the #1 killer of women, yet most of us don’t consider ourselves at risk. Keep these basic numbers in mind for heart health:

  • Keep blood pressure below 120/80
  • Keep LDL cholesterol lower than 160
  • Maintain a body-mass index of under 25

Cardio workouts don’t have to be boring trudges on a treadmill. In the glorious Cayman Islands, take advantage of year round sunshine and get moving outdoors. Every minute of cardio counts, so even if ten minutes is all the time you have, go for it! Break a sweat with any of these activities:

  • A brisk walk on pristine Seven Mile Beach
  • A jog along South Sound
  • Roller Blading behind Grand Harbour
  • Bike riding in East End or Bodden Town
  • Sea Kayaking
  • Swimming in the Caribbean Sea
  • Jumping Rope

If strength training is your goal and you can’t bear to be indoors, it’s easy to do a total body workout in the privacy of your own back yard. All you need is a towel and a bottle of water. Start with some stretches, and then work through some old fashioned boot camp exercises: push ups, walking lunges, squats, sit ups, dips and jumping jacks. If you need guidance or inspiration, search the internet for free videos and fresh ideas.

Whatever exercise you choose, get there and enjoy it! Learn more about heart health at www.GoRedForWomen.com

Flow Yoga

Flow-Therapeutic Studio

Flow-Therapeutic Studio

If toning up your body is topping your New Year’s Resolution List, consider adding yoga to your workout regime. Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna attribute their long, lean physiques to their regular yoga practices. There are many options for yoga in Grand Cayman, but my personal favorite is Flow~Therapeutic Movement, owned by Kate Dunne. Tucked into a rambling private orchard, the airy studio is just moments away from busy Crewe Road but seems like it’s miles out in the country side. The cork floors, white gauzy curtains and flowing breezes make this inviting studio a haven from everyday stress.

Flow~ offers massage therapy as well as yoga and therapeutic movement instruction. Kate has over 18 years of experience and is a highly trained therapeutic movement specialist. Kate has made a lifetime commitment to bringing the best of ancient and modern techniques of addressing body movement to her clientele.

I’m currently taking an 8 week session of vinyasa flow yoga classes. Dawn Eryou is the talented instructor leading the flow sessions. Dawn hails from Canada, and has been with Flow~Therapeutic Movement for since fall 2007. She earned her Interdisciplinary YOGA certification through the Nosara Institute in Cost Rica. Dawn is a warm, caring instructor who is clearly devoted to helping her students get the most out of their yoga practice. After just three weeks, I am noticing increased core strength. The best benefit is the terrific sense of well being that I get after every single class. Walking out into the fragrant orchard, muscles warmed and mind cleared, I am grateful that Flow~Therapeutic is in the Cayman Islands.

Express Gym

Posted by admin

No time for a workout? Nonsense! Somewhere in your busy day is a 30 minute window that could be spent getting fit, fast. King’s Express Gym is open at Treasure Island Resort on West Bay Road and provides an ideal solution for anyone seeking a quick, effective fitness solution.

The small yet mighty gym is designed for cardio workouts, free weight training or circuit training. Circuit training is a concept that allows minimal rest periods between exercises and keeps your heart rate up for the entire workout.  The state-of-the-art Cybex machines are arranged to maximize a whole-body workout that can be completed in less than 30 minutes. Even a weight training novice can follow the system: an actual traffic light let you know when it’s time to move onto the next machine. It totally eliminates the “machine hogging” that goes on at traditional gyms. When the light turns green, it’s time to move on to the next exercise.

Personal training services are also available at King’s Express Gym. Call     (345) 769-5464     or stop by to get started today.

Cayman Kayaks

Posted by admin

Are you in a cardio rut? Try a thrilling exercise adventure exploring Grand Cayman’s beautiful North Sound with Cayman Kayaks. Cayman Kayaks offers eco-adventure kayaking tours in the pristine waters of the North Sound, the largest reef-fringed lagoon of the Cayman Islands. Far away from the hustle and bustle of Seven Mile Beach, you can experience the mangroves, bays and beaches of Grand Cayman on a stable and safe sit-on-top kayak.  Cayman Kayaks offers a number of different tours, ranging from the tranquil and relaxing Mangrove Adventure to the fascinating and challenging Bio-Bay Tour. The Bio-Bay tour takes place on the darkest nights of the month when the moon has not risen or is new to avoid light pollution.  One of nature’s most enthralling light shows on earth can be found right here in the Cayman Islands at Rum Point’s Bio-bay, and is caused by bioluminescence. Bioluminescence is the phenomenon where light or glow is created by a living creature by an internal chemical reaction. Once inside Bio-bay you will be amazed by nature’s fireworks.

You will have so much fun, you won’t even notice how hard your upper body muscles are working. Cayman Kayaks offers one of the most enjoyable workouts in all of the Caribbean. Afterwards, you can swim, enjoy the stunning beach, or enjoy a meal at nearby Kaibo resort.

This adventure is an absolute must.

Seven Mile Beach Walk

Posted by admin

One of the best cardio workouts in Grand Cayman is absolutely free: a brisk walk on Seven Mile Beach.  This pristine stretch of sand is one of the most famous beaches in the world, with good reason. Sugar white sand, azure water and non-stop sun make Seven Mile Beach ideal for a power walk. Unlike other Caribbean beaches, there are no vendors allowed on the beach, so visitors can stroll in peace. Walking is an excellent workout, burning 280 calories per hour for a 120 pound female walking at 4 miles per hour.
