Irish Jog

If you’re looking for a 5k event that does not involve getting up at the crack of dawn, we’ve got just the thing for you: the 18th Annual St. Patricks Day 5k Irish Jog on Wednesday, March 18th at 5:30 PM. The event is co-sponsored each year by Butterfield Bank (Cayman) Limited and Grand Cayman Beach Suites. Serious runners and walkers pushing baby strollers are welcome.

This event is held at the Grand Cayman Beach Suites Golf Course, and it’s only CI $10.00 to participate (US $12.50). T-shirt and refreshments are provided to all joggers. Bring your friends and family and help out the Cayman Islands Diabetes Center.

This is one of my favorite events of the year. It’s a fun group of people, and beautiful venue. Bonus point: no waking up at 5:00 AM for exercise!

For an entry form, e-mail: irishjog@ky.butterfieldgroup.com or call Rhonda Serrano at 815-7549.

Here is a really special fitness event: you can do a 5k walk, with your dog! It’s called the 5k Dog Jog, and it sounds like a heck of a lot of fun. It’s being held on Sunday, February 14th, 2010, from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM.  Even if you don’t have a doggie, it will be a blast to see all the cute dogs that will be participating in this terrific event. Care (Cayman Animal Rescue Enthusiasts) and St. Matthew’s University Vet School is hosting this event. The event is a fundraising event to help raise funds for spay and neuter services provided by Care and to help increase obesity awareness for pet owners!

Entry fee $15

Start and Finish at the parking lot across from the old Gecko’s Beach Bar (next to the Courtyard Marriott on 7 mile beach) and immediately adjacent to the St. Matthew’s Residence Suites on Raleigh Quay Road.

Bring your dog (on a leash please) and your running shoes and walk or run this event to help raise money for this great cause!

For more information or to pre-register please contact:

Katie Malensek (SMU)- kmalensek@hotmail.com

Lesley Agostinelli (Care)- lesley@oceanfrontiers.com

I will definitely see you there! My senior Miss Tiffy (a very old rescued Maltese) is too fragile to walk the 5k, but she’ll be very excited to tag along with me in her special travel pink bag. I would not miss this event for the world!

Reefathlon

Reefathlon

Cayman cycling enthusiasts already know about the upcoming event at The Reef Resort that combines cycling, relaxing, and meeting new friends: “Reefathlon” at the Reef Resort is taking place on Sunday, November 22nd, 2009. Anyone looking for a tremendous way to get in some exercise and relaxation will enjoy this event.

The folks at the Reef resort have created their own version of a triathlon that includes cycling, and replaces “swim” and “run” with “snorkel” and “leisurely stroll around the beach”. (We like the way the Reef thinks!) There has been recent resurfacing of roads in the vicinity of the Reef resort, so there are first class class roads, perfect weather, and no traffic. Perfect conditions for cyclists!

Cycling

Cycling

For anyone that decides to make a weekend out of it, rest assured that you are in for a treat. Reef takes relaxation to a whole new level in the Cayman Islands, and the staff at The Reef will ensure that your stay there will be an absolutely ideal break from the hustle and bustle of the typical Seven Mile Beach vacation. The Reef takes the racing end of it very seriously, however. The race manager, Craig Merren, is a three time Olympic cyclist and the first Caymanian cyclist to win Gold and Silver medal at the CARIFTA games.

The 19 minute time trial starts at 7:00 AM on the day of the event, which is Sunday, November 22nd, 2009. There is a chance to win $1,000 for the person who breaks the course record! For more information about the event, visit http://www.reefathlon.com/.

Cayman Islands Cancer Society

Cayman Islands Cancer Society

It’s time for “Stride Against Cancer”, the biggest non-competitive walk/run event of 2009. The event will be held on Sunday, the 25th of January.

Stride Against Cancer has been an annual event in the Cayman Islands Cancer Society’s fundraising calendar for over ten years and it is one of the Society’s biggest annual fundraisers. Thanks to the generous support of the event’s corporate sponsors, 100% of each registration fee is donated to fund the Society’s programs. The funds raised support cancer awareness initiatives and assist cancer sufferers and their families on all three of the Cayman Islands.

The Stride event is one of the most anticipated community events of the year. Last year had 1500 registrants and there are high hopes for the 2009 walk/run to be even better attended. The format is the same as last year. The event remains non-competitive. The “Long Course” (13.1 miles) starts at 6:00 AM and the “Short Course” starts at 7:00 AM. Both events start at the Public Beach on West Bay Road.

Registration began January 14th. You can register at all the major supermarkets including Fosters Food Fair Airport, Strand, Country Side, and Republix stores, Kirk Supermarket, and Hurley’s Marketplace between 10:00 AM and 4:00PM on both January 17th and 24th (Saturdays).

You can also register Monday through Friday 8:30-5:00 at the office on Eclipse Drive (off Eastern Avenue) in the MCR Building, Suite 4. Nearby landmarks are The Television Centre, Final Touch, and Rankine Plaza.

Registration is only $25.00, and there is a goody bag with a t-shirt for you. The best part is the great feeling you’ll have after a morning walk for a fantastic cause.

See you there!
