Mike Risdale

Mike Risdale

Dog and cat lovers in the Cayman Islands are probably familiar with the Cayman Islands Humane Society. We all know how much this facility needs funds for improvements. Mike Risdale, a well known triathlete and runner, will be taking on a supreme challenge to raise funds for the Cayman Islands Humane Society. He will be running from Morgan’s Harbour to Rum Point, and to make it a bit harder, he’ll be following the coastal road up the Blow Holes and past Morritt’s Tortuga. That’s a total of FORTY-SIX MILES OF RUNNING!!!!!!

This event will take place on Sunday, January 16th, 2011 and Mike will be raising funds for renovation works at the Cayman Islands Humane Society.

Mike has been thinking about doing this for awhile. He often participates in local races with his trusty running partner “Pretty Girl”, a beautiful dog who has been living at the Humane Society for the last 18 months. (We are all hoping that this event brings a “forever home” to this lovely pet, who deserves a loving family of her own.) Mike thought this event would be a fantastic way of raising funds for a few projects that are well needed at the shelter.

Pretty Girl

Pretty Girl

Mike will be starting the event at 5:00 AM, so the majority of the run will be after the sun has risen. He has been training for months, specifically for this event. The biggest challenge he will face will be the heat, apart from the daunting distance. 46 miles would take a toll on any distance runner. The best outcome would be raising plenty of funds, and heightening awareness for the animals in the shelter. Last year was a VERY challenging year for the Humane Society, with a high volume of abandoned pets left at the shelter. Mike’s timing is excellent.

“Pretty Girl” is a sweet, special dog who once had a home with her two brothers. Sadly, they just weren’t wanted any more. Pretty Girl lives up to her name in looks and heart, but it’s hard for her to keep up a positive outlook. Both of her brothers have been adopted, and she’s been left behind. She’s missing her brothers terribly! Please, please, PLEASE foster her or help us find a forever home for this loyal and devoted doggie. It’s time for her to have a family of her own to love!

If you would like to sponsor Mike, email him at mike2403@gmail.com  I’ve already made my donation! If didn’t already have two rescued dogs, I would already have Pretty Girl at my house with some new toys. Please pass this on and let’s make this event a BIG SUCCESS!

Reefathlon

Reefathlon

Cayman cycling enthusiasts already know about the upcoming event at The Reef Resort that combines cycling, relaxing, and meeting new friends: “Reefathlon” at the Reef Resort is taking place on Sunday, November 22nd, 2009. Anyone looking for a tremendous way to get in some exercise and relaxation will enjoy this event.

The folks at the Reef resort have created their own version of a triathlon that includes cycling, and replaces “swim” and “run” with “snorkel” and “leisurely stroll around the beach”. (We like the way the Reef thinks!) There has been recent resurfacing of roads in the vicinity of the Reef resort, so there are first class class roads, perfect weather, and no traffic. Perfect conditions for cyclists!

Cycling

Cycling

For anyone that decides to make a weekend out of it, rest assured that you are in for a treat. Reef takes relaxation to a whole new level in the Cayman Islands, and the staff at The Reef will ensure that your stay there will be an absolutely ideal break from the hustle and bustle of the typical Seven Mile Beach vacation. The Reef takes the racing end of it very seriously, however. The race manager, Craig Merren, is a three time Olympic cyclist and the first Caymanian cyclist to win Gold and Silver medal at the CARIFTA games.

The 19 minute time trial starts at 7:00 AM on the day of the event, which is Sunday, November 22nd, 2009. There is a chance to win $1,000 for the person who breaks the course record! For more information about the event, visit http://www.reefathlon.com/.

Lululemon

Lululemon

Everyone pictures life in the Cayman Islands as a stress-free environment but residents know that’s not really the case, don’t we? It’s a great gig here in Cayman but we’ve got our share of worries: inflation, real estate woes, global warming, hurricane threats, and everyday stuff like serious traffic jams. (Yes, we have traffic jams here in tiny Grand Cayman! Lovely Cayman Brac and Little Cayman don’t have bad traffic but GC is bumper to bumper in the AM and PM rush hours.) We can’t escape to a huge mall for retail therapy but we can walk on miles of sensational beach, or we can take advantage of one of Cayman’s amazing yoga centers. One of the best is Bliss.

Bliss is a heart inspired yoga sudio and Lululemon Retail Store offering classes in hot yoga, power flowand vinyasa, Anusara-inspired yoga, Kundalini, Hatha, yin, meditation, Kids Yoga, Workshops, Clinics and seasonal special events. There is also a full line of Lululemon Athletica clothing and accessories. Located on Seven Mile Beach, the studio has a full schedule of drop-in and session classes seven days a week.

Come and experience the tranquil environment, a place to transcend life’s hectic pace, and a way to cleanse the body, calm the mind, and nourish your soul.
