Art@Governors

Art@Governors

On January 30th, 2010 over 100 artists, crafts people and designers will be demonstrating their talents at this year’s Art@Governors event, the islands’ premier art event held each year on the lawn of Government House. Co-hosts His Excellency Governor Mr. Duncan Taylor and Mrs. Taylor, and the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands invite everyone to attend this year’s event.

In the years since its inauguration in 2000, Art@Governors has become the only festival of its kind in Cayman to display such a diverse number of visual art forms from paintings, ceramics, sculpture and leatherwork to thatch work, body paintings, jewellery, quilts, photography and handicrafts. Visitors have a chance to meet seasoned and emerging artists one on one, to query their art processes and to participate in creating a work of art themselves. The event also gives visitors the opportunity to view the differences and similarities between the traditional heritage craft and the contemporary arts of the islands, and the ways in which one has inspired the other.

Join His Excellency Governor Duncan Taylor and his family and the National Gallery for an afternoon of artistic stimulation of all kinds on Saturday 30th January from 1pm to 5pm. The event is entirely free and all are welcome to attend.

Title: Art@Governors

When: Saturday, Jan 30 - Saturday, Jan 31 01:00 PM - 05:00 PM
Where: Government House and Governors Square, West Bay Road

Observation Tower

Observation Tower

Do you give a hoot about keeping global warming at bay? GOOD! Here is a fun, super quick way to show your support ! You just need to get up a wee bit early Saturday, October 24th (tomorrow) and meet at The Observation Tower at Camana Bay to participate in an event organized by Camana Eco. The plan is to get a group of people gathered in the shape of the digits “350″. Someone will climb to the top of the Camana Bay Observation Tower and take a picture of our group and then send it to www.350.org, the organizers of the event. The idea behind “350″ is to highlight the optimum number amount (parts per million) of carbon dioxide that should be in the atmosphere to keep global warming at bay. We’re hoping for at least 10 people, but if we’re lucky, we’ll get 30-40 people to participate!

Afterwards (optional) we’ll pop over to Eats Cafe to for a bite of breakfast. What a fun way to start your Saturday!

Date: October 24th (this Saturday)

Time: 7:30-7:45 AM

Place: Camana Bay-Bottom of the Observation Tower

Support the Humane Society

Humane Society

Humane Society

Are you a cat or dog lover? GOOD! There are two ways you can help the super-duper hard working folks at the Cayman Islands Humane Society this weekend, with two different events to show your support.

The first neat opportunity to show your support is a signature charity event held at The Lighthouse Restaurant in Breakers on Saturday, September 19th, from noon until 2:00 PM. It’s a special cooking class with celebrity Chef Remy, and there will be several VIP celebrity guests. Hint…his Excellency Governor Stuart Jack! Indeed!

The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse

Upon arrival, nibble on excellent Canapes and Prosecco before being seated for a full four course lunch with wine. Enjoy spectacular views of the beautiful Caribbean Sea, hobnob with celebrity chefs, guests, and good hearted animal lovers, all for the amazingly reasonable price of only CI $70.00! And every penny goes to the Humane Society. I have spent some time at this tremendous organization, and I can tell you that $70.00 goes a long way. The volunteers save lives each and every day. They take strays and unwanted animals, care for them and love them, and they become cherished pets for hundreds of Cayman families. Enjoy a grand day afternoon at The Lighthouse for a great cause!

Please call 345-947-2047, and say your reservation is for the Celebrity Cooking Class. A credit card will be required for a reservation. Space is limited for 36 people-first come, first serve, so call soon. Maybe you’ll be chatting up the Governor at lunch!

The second event is the fun and irresistible Yappy Hour! Held annually at Coconut Joes, the it’s a chance to get your car washed, or your dogs washed, or both! Bring in your dirty dogs and cars, and get ‘em cleaned up while you kick back with an ice cold drink at the bar. There are even special doggy cakes for your pooches.

As always, this is a free event, but DONATIONS ARE WELCOME! All proceeds benefit the Cayman Islands Humane Society.

Car Wash: 10:00 AM-1:00 PM

Dog Wash: 2:00 PM-5:00 PM

Even if you don’t have a doggy, join the fun.  Bring a few bucks for the donation, and have a few cold ones; there are drink specials all day!

Please pick one of these event and support the Humane Society this weekend. See ya at Yappy Hour! I’ll be there with with Beano, the Toy Fox Terrier and Tiffy, the Maltese, our two rescued doggies!

Eric Jerome Dickey

Eric Jerome Dickey

On Wednesday, August 26th, eleven time New York Times bestselling author Eric Jerome Dickey launched the publicity tour for his latest novel, Resurrecting Midnight, at Books & Books. The exciting event was packed with over one hundred adoring fans, which was not hard to understand once Eric took his place at the podium at Hollywood Theatres, where the wildly popular author held his book discussion. The demand to hear Eric speak about his book was so overwhelming that a larger venue to be arranged to accommodate the crowds! Eric is warm, friendly and very entertaining as a public speaker and he interacted frequently with his mostly-female audience. Dickey began his discussion by asking the audience which of his 12 novels they would most like to hear an excerpt from. One enthusiastic fan jumped up from her seat to offer her treasured copy of the The Other Woman. After reading a lengthy romantic passage from The Other Woman (amid many deep sighs from the audience) Dickey briefly introduced Resurrecting Midnight. He began his very first public reading of the new novel, which was released the previous day. What an honor for the Cayman Islands that he chose us! We were all enthralled as Eric offered a sneak peak into the steamy new thriller featuring sexy international assassins, Gideon and Arizona. Dickey then answered as many questions as he could before heading over to Books & Books for the book signing. More than 100 excited fans lined up and waited for their chance to meet the popular author, get a photo, and get their books signed. I watched Eric as he met dozens of his fans and he obviously enjoys this interaction; this is what makes him “tick”.

The event is yet another success in Books & Books Visiting International Author Series, sponsored by Sunshine Suites and Ogiers.

Child Month Logo

Child Month Logo

In celebration of Child Month, the Department of Children and Family Services will be hosting a special Bedtime Stories event for families and children at Books & Books on Wednesday, May 27th at 6PM.

This year, the theme for Child Month is Time with Your Child-A Wise Investment, and in keeping with this idea, the main purpose of Bedtime Stories at Books & Books will be to show parents the benefits of Making Bedtime a Family Time by reading to their children.

Miriam Foster, Programmes Officer of the Empowerment and Community Development Agency, will be giving parents useful tips on making stories exciting, getting their kids involved in story time, and creating alternatives to television. Each tip will be demonstrated by the reading of a great children’s book. Following the presentation, parents will be given the chance to practice the tips by choosing a book from the extensive Books & Books selection to read to their children. Gentle lullabies will play in the background while parents and children enjoy quality family time.

Milk and cookies for the first 30 children will be provided by the Department of Children and Family Services. Miriam Foster has also chosen the selection of children’s books that follow her tips, and these will be available for purchase at a 5% discount on the evening of the event.

This event is free and open to the public. For up to date information on all Books & Books events in Grand Cayman, visit www.booksandbooks.com

Artist April Bending

Artist April Bending

After a year of showing internationally in New York City, Berlin, Beijing and Milan, artist April Bending is having a show in Grand Cayman at Cafe Del Sol in Camana Bay on May 14th, 2009 from 6:00-9:00 PM.

April has been recognized locally in the past by being invited to display eight paintings on the set of the Frankie Flowers’ movie “Haven”, starring Orlando Bloom, and by having images chosen for the flags of the National Heroes Day Celebrations.

April Bending

April Bending

The theme “Camana Blues” is based on the colour of the paintings which are in shades of blue, evoking the beauty of our Caribbean Sea. By focusing on the serenity of the sea, as opposed to its tremendous potential destructive power, Bending creates a subtlety which is heightened by the use of a dark under painting. This quiets the colours applied in layers over the top.

Be sure to stop in Friday evening for a yummy coffee drink and a chance to meet April in person. Cayman is fortunate to have an internationally acclaimed artist on our midst for an enchanting evening. Come to Cafe Del Sol in Camana Bay this Friday evening  6:00-9:00PM and see this gorgeous artwork for yourself!
