CIHS

The place to be Friday evening, September 30, at 6:30 PM is the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman. It’s the annual Cayman Islands Humane Society Fashion Show! The theme this year is “Doggywood: Fashion Unleashed“.  The CI $100.00 donation covers dinner and the show, and that’s a great deal, for a wonderful night out at the Ritz! Live music, cash bar, a yummy buffet, a fashion show, and of course, a show featuring fabulous dogs from the shelter. All proceeds benefit CIHS. Host Vicki Wheaton is terrific, and this event always draws a very fun crowd. There is a silent auction, and “gently used” designer items available for purchase at bargain prices. Royal Wedding Street Party

Posted by admin

The Crown Jewels
The Crown Jewels

Camana Bay is wrapping up a gala week of Royal Wedding festivities! If you didn’t stay up all night or get up early to catch the Royal Wedding, don’t despair. Head over to Camana Bay, which on the day of the wedding, will be transformed for a traditional “street party”, a community gathering historically held in Britain to commemorate momentous occasions. Guests can expect the all the hallmarks of a British street party, including trestle tables, bunting and union jack flags. A recording of the wedding, which airs at 5AM local time, will be shown on the giant outdoor screen at 6:30 PM, and after the ceremony there will be fantastic fireworks. Wear your best hat for a chance to win a $50.00 gift certificate from Sand Angels. Traditional British fare such as afternoon tea, tikki masala, and fish and chips will be for sale. Beefeater “Guards” will be patrolling the streets, making for great photo opportunities, and the kids can enjoy decorating crown shaped cookies or dressing up in royal garb in the Tower Bridge photo booth. Live on The Paseo will feature Mango Jam closing out the celebration with popular tunes from the British Invasion such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Don’t miss the Replica Crown Jewels Exhibition. Each of the 25 pieces were hand made in London. Each full size replica is hand polished, and set with Swarovski crystals, and hand cut replica diamonds. The collection includes crowns, sceptres, orbs, swords, rings, armills, robes, and other objects. The Crown Jewels have a long and fascinating history. The spectacular replicas are on display through April 30th throughout Town Centre at Camana Bay. Visit the Discovery Centre and pick up a walking tour map to see them all.

Art@Governors

Art@Governors

My favorite art event of the year is coming up again: ART @ GOVERNORS! Saturday, February 5th from 12:30PM to 4:00 PM at Government House and Governors Square (West Bay Road.) I go to this event every year and I have never failed to find a fabulous piece of art, even if it’s something small. Last year I picked up a stunning oil painting (a seascape) for under $150.00.

FREE ADMISSION!

Where else in Cayman can you view the works of over 150 artists and craft persons at one time? This will be a wonderful afternoon for the whole family. There will be art activities, craft demonstrations, cultural displays, free catboat rides, music by Oneworld Entertainment, the St. Ignatius Sax Ensemble, story telling, and many more things to do & see. Of course, there are the fabulous shops at Governors Square to visit, and the beach is right across the street! Grab a cone at TCBY on your way out and be glad you are in the Cayman Islands on this glorious weekend, and not facing the big snow & ice storm that so many are dealing with in the US. (It is wintertime, remember?)

Artists

Artists

Come out Saturday and support the local artists of the Cayman Islands. It’s so much fun just to appreciate the amazing talent we have in this country. I always enjoy talking to the various artists and learning what inspires them to create the beautiful paintings, sculptures, quilts, and other works of art that abounds Art @ Governors 2011.

Are you looking for a new best friend? The Cayman Islands Humane Society will have a booth at the event, and they’ll have some adorable, adoptable furry buddies there, looking for “forever homes.” At the very least, stop by and make a donation to this worthy cause, or sign up to become a dog walker.

Questions about the event can be emailed to Mona at the National Gallery: communications.ng@candw.ky

Observation Tower

Observation Tower

Do you give a hoot about keeping global warming at bay? GOOD! Here is a fun, super quick way to show your support ! You just need to get up a wee bit early Saturday, October 24th (tomorrow) and meet at The Observation Tower at Camana Bay to participate in an event organized by Camana Eco. The plan is to get a group of people gathered in the shape of the digits “350″. Someone will climb to the top of the Camana Bay Observation Tower and take a picture of our group and then send it to www.350.org, the organizers of the event. The idea behind “350″ is to highlight the optimum number amount (parts per million) of carbon dioxide that should be in the atmosphere to keep global warming at bay. We’re hoping for at least 10 people, but if we’re lucky, we’ll get 30-40 people to participate!

Afterwards (optional) we’ll pop over to Eats Cafe to for a bite of breakfast. What a fun way to start your Saturday!

Date: October 24th (this Saturday)

Time: 7:30-7:45 AM

Place: Camana Bay-Bottom of the Observation Tower

Child Month Logo

Child Month Logo

In celebration of Child Month, the Department of Children and Family Services will be hosting a special Bedtime Stories event for families and children at Books & Books on Wednesday, May 27th at 6PM.

This year, the theme for Child Month is Time with Your Child-A Wise Investment, and in keeping with this idea, the main purpose of Bedtime Stories at Books & Books will be to show parents the benefits of Making Bedtime a Family Time by reading to their children.

Miriam Foster, Programmes Officer of the Empowerment and Community Development Agency, will be giving parents useful tips on making stories exciting, getting their kids involved in story time, and creating alternatives to television. Each tip will be demonstrated by the reading of a great children’s book. Following the presentation, parents will be given the chance to practice the tips by choosing a book from the extensive Books & Books selection to read to their children. Gentle lullabies will play in the background while parents and children enjoy quality family time.

Milk and cookies for the first 30 children will be provided by the Department of Children and Family Services. Miriam Foster has also chosen the selection of children’s books that follow her tips, and these will be available for purchase at a 5% discount on the evening of the event.

This event is free and open to the public. For up to date information on all Books & Books events in Grand Cayman, visit www.booksandbooks.com

Artist April Bending

Artist April Bending

After a year of showing internationally in New York City, Berlin, Beijing and Milan, artist April Bending is having a show in Grand Cayman at Cafe Del Sol in Camana Bay on May 14th, 2009 from 6:00-9:00 PM.

April has been recognized locally in the past by being invited to display eight paintings on the set of the Frankie Flowers’ movie “Haven”, starring Orlando Bloom, and by having images chosen for the flags of the National Heroes Day Celebrations.

April Bending

April Bending

The theme “Camana Blues” is based on the colour of the paintings which are in shades of blue, evoking the beauty of our Caribbean Sea. By focusing on the serenity of the sea, as opposed to its tremendous potential destructive power, Bending creates a subtlety which is heightened by the use of a dark under painting. This quiets the colours applied in layers over the top.

Be sure to stop in Friday evening for a yummy coffee drink and a chance to meet April in person. Cayman is fortunate to have an internationally acclaimed artist on our midst for an enchanting evening. Come to Cafe Del Sol in Camana Bay this Friday evening  6:00-9:00PM and see this gorgeous artwork for yourself!

The Camelot Auction

Posted by admin

It’s time for one of Grand Cayman’s most anticipated events of the year! On Friday, May 22nd, 2009, the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman will be hosting its major fundraising event, Camelot Auction, at the Ritz Carlton. This wonderfully entertaining event has gained in reputation as a premier annual event auction in the Cayman Islands. This year’s theme is “Cabaret”, featuring live entertainment by the talented artists and entertainers of the Vivendi Cabaret.

The event is a blast, with the coolest auction items you can imagine. It’s not the usual “auction stuff”. The fundraising team is extremely creative, and they work diligently to come up with exceptional items for the auction. They even created a website to visit ahead of time to get you thinking about what you items you will be bidding on: www.camelot.ky . I spent some time on the website became intrigued with several of the Camelot Auctions items. Here are just a few examples:

Dinner for Six

Dinner for Six, with a Sommelier, listed as “Priceless”

Garmin GPS Oregon 300

Garmin GPS Oregon 300 , $900

Dental Bleaching

Dental Bleaching, $350

There are tons of other fun things to consider bidding on, so visit the website and see what tickles your fancy. Mark your calendars for this exciting event. You’ll have a great time, and help raise money for important community service projects. Last year the event raised over $130,00 for various worthy causes including Meals on Wheels, the Central Caribbean Marine Institute, and various regional hurricane relief programs.

Tickets are CI $200.00 each. For tickets, contact Sebastien Guilbard at sguilgbard@smu.ky or call 326-1014.
